50 Essential Circassian Words and Phrases
The vocabulary you need to start your Circassian language journey.
Learning a new language always starts the same way: with the basics. And when it comes to the Circassian language, knowing even a handful of key words can open doors. Whether you are reconnecting with your Adyghe roots or learning Kabardian from scratch, these 50 words and phrases are where to begin.
The words below are given in Kabardian (East Circassian), which is the more widely spoken dialect. Many of them are shared with or very similar in the Adyghe (West Circassian) dialect.
Greetings
Уи махуэ ф1ыц1э (Wi makhue fits'e) means "Good day" and is the standard greeting. You will hear this constantly.
Сэлам (Selam) is an informal "Hello" borrowed from Arabic, widely used across the Circassian diaspora.
Упсэу (Upseu) means "Thank you." This is one of the first words every learner picks up.

Tips for Learning These Words
The Circassian language has sounds that do not exist in English, Russian, Turkish, or Arabic. The ejective consonants (marked with 1 in the Circassian alphabet), the uvular sounds, and the pharyngeal sounds require practice. Listening to native speakers is essential. Written transliterations can only approximate the actual pronunciation.
Start with the greetings and family words, since these are the ones you will use first in any Circassian social context. If you visit a Circassian home or cultural event, being able to say "Уи махуэ ф1ыц1э" (good day) and "Упсэу" (thank you) will make an immediate positive impression. From there, build outward to numbers, everyday words, and cultural vocabulary.
These 50 words are just the beginning. But they cover the essentials: greetings, family, numbers, daily life, culture, and nature. Mastering them gives you a real foundation for learning Circassian.
