This page plays Lesson 1 of the Circassian App’s audio course: the same recording the app plays, with the app’s own subtitles. Pick Kabardian or Adyghe, press play and answer out loud when the narrator pauses. By the end you are taking part in a short café conversation. Below are the lesson’s words, its full transcript and all 30 lessons of the course.

6 minLesson 1, with the English narrator
44pauses in Lesson 1 for you to speak
11words and phrases in Lesson 1
30lessons per dialect, plus a short introduction
8+ hof lessons in each dialect
3narration languages: English, Russian, Turkish

How Lesson 1 works

Every lesson is built the same way: a conversation you cannot follow yet, then its pieces one at a time, then the conversation again with you in it. Lesson 1 in five parts (tap a time to jump there):

  1. The conversation

A man and a woman greet each other. He asks whether she is Circassian; she says yes and asks him back. You hear it twice, and the narrator says that by the end of the lesson you will understand it and take part.

  2. Word by word

Each new word is said, said again slowly, and repeated by you. Then the narrator asks for it (“How do you say yes?”), you answer in the pause, and you hear it again to check yourself.

  3. Words become answers

Yes and “I am Circassian” become one answer, “yes, I am Circassian”, which you put together yourself in the pause before you hear it. Then comes “yes, I’m Circassian too”.

  4. Everything once more

A quick round: say Circassian, say hello, say “I am Circassian”, say yes, say no, ask “are you Circassian?”. Each time you answer first.

  5. Your part in the conversation

You answer the man in the café, then ask him back. The conversation plays from the start and you answer as the woman, and at last you are the man. The lesson ends: “You understood the whole conversation.”

In about 6 minutes the lesson stops 44 times for you to speak, and under the player you can see when it is your turn.

The 11 words and phrases of Lesson 1

Everything Lesson 1 teaches, in both dialects. The meanings are the narrator’s own, and each single word means the same in the app’s regular lessons. Tap a time to hear the moment it is taught.

Lesson 1, line by line

How to learn with it

The course’s own introduction, Lesson 0 in the app, asks four things of you:

Say it out loud

When the narrator asks you to say something, there is a short silence. Say it out loud before you hear the answer: thinking it quietly is not enough.

Keep going

If you cannot remember, do not stop. Listen to the answer, say it and go on: you practise every word again in the lessons that follow.

One lesson a day

A little every day beats a lot at once. You do not have to be perfect: if most answers come to you, move on, and repeat any lesson whenever you want.

Only by ear

No reading, no writing, no word lists. You learn the way you learned your first language, by listening and speaking, one small conversation at a time.

All 30 lessons

The same 30 lessons exist in Kabardian and in Adyghe, plus a one-minute introduction. Lessons 2 to 5 take 11 to 13 minutes and the later ones 15 to 21, a little over 8 hours per dialect with the English narrator. The introduction and Lessons 1 to 3 are free; the others come with Premium.

It keeps playing with the screen off, with play, pause and skip on your lock screen.

Offline

Download lessons, or the whole course, and listen without a connection.

Subtitles

Turn on the subtitles you see above and tap any line to jump to it.

Any speed

Picks up where you stopped

It remembers your place in every lesson and goes on to the next lesson by itself.

Your language

The narrator speaks the app’s language: English, Russian or Turkish.

What is free

Lesson 1 plays free on this page for anyone. In the app, the introduction and Lessons 1 to 3 are free in both dialects and need no account. Lessons 4 to 30 come with Premium, the app’s optional subscription, which also removes the hearts limit and opens the AI tutor without limits; new subscribers get 3 days free. The app’s main course, the alphabet and the Habze lessons stay free either way: what is free, line by line.

Kabardian or Adyghe?

Choose the dialect your family speaks. Kabardian (East Circassian) is spoken in Kabardino-Balkaria and by the Kabardian and Besleney tribes; Adyghe (West Circassian) is spoken in the Republic of Adygea and by the West Circassian tribes, such as the Abzakh, Shapsug, Bzhedug, Temirgoy and Hatuqay. Not sure? See which course fits your tribe and how the two dialects differ. You can switch the dialect in the app at any time.

Questions about the audio course

Is the Circassian audio course free?

Lesson 1 plays free on this page. In the app, the introduction and Lessons 1 to 3 are free in both dialects, without an account. Lessons 4 to 30 come with Premium, the app’s optional subscription.

Which dialect does it teach?

Both, as two separate courses of 30 lessons: Kabardian (East Circassian) and Adyghe (West Circassian). They follow the same plan, and each one speaks only its own dialect.

Do I need to read Cyrillic?

No. The course is entirely by ear: the narrator explains in English, Russian or Turkish, and every Circassian word is spoken. The subtitles and the transcript on this page are there if you want them.

How long is each lesson?

Lesson 1 takes about 6 minutes. Lessons 2 to 5 take 11 to 13 minutes, and from Lesson 6 on they take 15 to 21. The course advises one lesson a day.

Can I listen with the screen off, or offline?

In the app, yes: the course keeps playing with the screen off, shows on your lock screen, and lessons can be downloaded to play offline. On this page, Lesson 1 streams in your browser.

What do I learn in Lesson 1?

Hello, Circassian, I am Circassian, you, yes, no and I; how to ask “are you Circassian?”; and how to answer “yes, I am Circassian” and “yes, I’m Circassian too”. That is 11 words and phrases, enough for the lesson’s café conversation.

How is it different from the app’s regular lessons?

The regular course is visual: you read, tap and match. The audio course is only listening and speaking: you answer out loud, and every word comes back in the lessons that follow.
