The full dictionary in the app
The Kabardian dictionary in the Circassian app has 24,190 entries. It comes from a printed Kabardian–Russian dictionary (Apazhev and Kokov, Nalchik 2008), so every entry has a Russian definition; English and Turkish searches go through an index built from those definitions. On top of the dictionary, the app searches the 2,216 Kabardian phrases of its lessons, with a listen button where it has the audio.
The book was scanned from paper, so a few entries still carry scanning errors: a word that looks odd is worth checking in a second source. The words on this page come from the app’s lessons, not from the scan.
- Open the Circassian app and choose Kabardian as your course.
- Tap Translate in the bar at the bottom of the Learn screen, or the translate button at the top of Messages.
- Type a word in English, Russian or Turkish, or in Kabardian. The dictionary results appear under it at once, without an account and without internet.
Words by topic
Each topic page has its words in both dialects, with sources, example sentences and a quiz. More: numbers, the phrasebook, the Kabardian translator and the Kabardian lessons.
Questions
Is there a Kabardian–English dictionary?
Yes: the Circassian app’s Kabardian dictionary has 24,190 entries and is searchable in English, free on iPhone and Android. This page lists 143 common words and 87 phrases with audio.
How do I hear how a Kabardian word sounds?
Tap the speaker next to a word on this page, or in the app. The audio is the app’s own, the same as in its lessons.
Does the dictionary work without internet?
Yes. The dictionary is part of the app, so looking up a word needs neither internet nor an account. Translating whole sentences needs both.
Where does the Kabardian dictionary come from?
From a printed Kabardian–Russian dictionary (Apazhev and Kokov, Nalchik 2008), scanned into the app. A few entries still carry scanning errors.
