New Word

red

In Circassian, this is:

плъыжь

pl'yzh'

This is how the app introduces a new word: a card from the Kabardian course’s “Colors” unit, recreated with its real text and colours. The sound buttons work; the tortoise plays it slowly.

Short answer

Red is плъыжь in Kabardian and плъыжьы in Adyghe; white is хужь and фыжьы; black is фIыцIэ and шIуцIэ.

Here are the basic colors in Kabardian (East Circassian) and Adyghe (West Circassian), as the Circassian app teaches them in the “Colors” unit of its two courses. The two dialects say most colors differently, so each word has its own column.

Every word here is a word the app teaches, checked against a second source: the Kabardian–Russian dictionary (Apazhev and Kokov, 2008), the app’s Adyghe dictionary, the app’s audio course (its scripts were reviewed by a native speaker of each dialect) or the Kabardian and Adyghe Wikipedias. A word that could not be checked this way is not on the page.

The colors in Kabardian and Adyghe

Kabardian (East Circassian) is on the left, Adyghe (West Circassian) on the right. Tap the speaker button to hear a word: the audio is the app’s own, the same as in its lessons. The Latin line under each word is the app’s spelling.

An empty cell means no second source confirmed the app’s word there; “Good to know” says why.

The words on this page are from the “Colors” unit (Section 1, Foundations) in the Circassian app’s Kabardian and Adyghe courses. The lessons teach them with audio and short quizzes, and bring back the ones you miss sooner.

In a sentence

These sentences are from the app’s audio course, with the course’s own translation. Its scripts were reviewed by a native speaker of each dialect.

This is white

KabardianМыр хужьщ.Myr khuzhshch.
AdygheМыр фыжьы.Myr fyzhy.

Good to know

Blue, and an empty cell. The Adyghe course teaches шхъуантIэ for blue, but the Adyghe dictionary in the app glosses that word as green, and the Kabardian–Russian dictionary gives its Kabardian twin, щхъуантIэ, as both green and light blue (p. 599). So the Adyghe cell for blue stays empty here until a native speaker checks it.

The colors of the flag. The Circassian flag is green, with twelve gold stars and three crossed gold arrows. In the app, green is удзыфэ in Kabardian and уцышъо in Adyghe, and yellow is гъуэжь and гъожьы.
